Far Cry 5 Tops Video Game Sales for March 2018

Far Cry 5 is already Ubisoft’s fastest selling title in the franchise’s history, eclipsing its predecessor with more than double its first week sales. Gamers from around the globe have flocked to experience Ubisoft’s take on rural Montana, which released on March 27, 2018. Despite coming out at the end of the month, the latest NPD report has confirmed that Far Cry 5 was the best selling videogame of March 2018.

The success of Far Cry 5 has also helped Ubisoft claim the crown as the publisher with the most year to date sales so far, no doubt due to the game stealing the top spot for both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 sales. Despite the strong opening month for Far Cry 5, the title didn’t break into the top 10 selling games over the last 12 month period, with Call of Duty: World War 2 keeping its top spot locked down. Yesterday’s release of South Park: The Fractured But Whole on the Nintendo Switch should also provide a somewhat decent bump to the publisher’s sales, albeit not to the extent of Far Cry 5‘s multiplatform release.

Coming in behind Ubisoft’s newest title was Sea of Thieves, a remarkable feat given that Rare’s multiplayer pirate title is exclusive to Xbox One and PC. It’s not clear if the sales charts are including gamers who accessed the title via the Microsoft Game Pass, the company’s new subscription-based gaming service. When the April numbers are eventually released, it’ll be interesting to see if Sony Santa Monica’s God of War can accomplish a similar feat for the highly-rated PlayStation 4 exclusive.

Gamers joining in the Far Cry 5 madness can even play on maps inspired by the very games Far Cry has outsold thanks to the title’s Arcade mode, which allows creative gamers to craft their own environments to duke it out in. Giving players a creative outlet can only help increase the shelf life of the game, an aspect in which the Far Cry series isn’t particularly well-known for. While it remains to be seen if Far Cry 5 can keep a firm hold on the chart’s top spot, Ubisoft has certainly done the intellectual property justice when it comes to sales.

Far Cry 5 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
